A very popular Indian chess game is a certain means of relaxation, ludo is a game based on ancient Indian pachisi. Although in the context, the accidental modern version is a much simpler explanation of pachisi, ludo still has many of its derivatives. Pachisi originating from the 6th century AD, its evolution is described on the caves of Ellora. Traditionally, playing on a cloth, Pachisi followed closely the Chopad game invented between the 2nd and 4th centuries. With cowhide and wooden pawns to plan maneuvering, pachisi or chopad was modified to use a die block with dice cup and patented as Ludo, in England in 1896.

The popular top game, carrom is indigenous to India. Basically, a very popular pocket and attack game throughout the early 19th century, especially during World War I, carrom is believed to have been invented by ancient Indian maharajas. With the International Carrom Federation established in 1988 in Chennai, the heritage of this fun sport of India is even more confirmed. The game sees many variations in its modern interpretation, both in terms of format or even as playing materials. Carrom is currently popular in Europe and the United States in addition to being a family favorite across South Asia and the Middle East.


Although wrestling itself is not originally from India, there is evidence of the popularity of some forms of wrestling in ancient country. The ancient Indian vedas as well as the epic sagas Mahabharata and Ramayana record wrestling as a martial art of the old days. In fact, there exists a record of a wrestling or wrestling match between Bhima and Jarasandha in Mahabharata. It is a deduction of this malla dwanda that led to the development of a special form of folk wrestling called pehlwani in India.
